Summer Skincare Tips for Rosacea-Prone Skin
Summer is here! Warmer temperatures and bright, sunny days are finally upon us and we just can't get enough of spending time outdoors and enjoying long evenings having summer drinks with our friends.
Unfortunately, all of these quintessential summer features can have a negative effect on your skin if you suffer from rosacea, facial redness or excessive blushing. Sunlight for instance, is known to be one of the most common rosacea triggers. The social festivities that arrive with summer can also involve alcohol consumption which is known to upset rosacea for many. Hot temperatures can open the fine blood vessels on your face, leading to high colour or even a burning sensation.
We understand your summer struggles and there are factors you might have to consider more than others to have fun. That's why we have dedicated this blog to bring you tips to help keep your rosacea at bay during the wonderful summer months:
1. SPF, every day!
We know we sound like a broken record but SPF is incredibly important for any skin type, especially rosacea-prone skin. We recommend an SPF30 or higher, ideally SPF50, every day - even if you're not really spending much time outside. However, if you are planning to make the best of the summer sunshine, make sure you top up your SPF throughout the day! If you use our Rosalique (SPF50) as your sunscreen, you can simply apply a bit more a few times a day, or you can apply an SPF spray or powder over the top.
2. Shade is your friend
If it is possible, stay out of the direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day which are between 10 am and 4 pm. If you must be outside, you can wear a stylish hat and sunglasses to keep your face shaded from the rays.
3. Go alcohol-free
You do not need alcohol to enjoy your summer. Alcohol opens up your blood vessels which increases a red and flushed complexion, and it also dehydrates you. Opt instead for a refreshing mocktail or an alcohol-free version of your favourite drink.
4. Watch out for dehydration
Caffeine, heat and dehydration can all trigger a Rosacea flare up. Therefore, we suggest that you cut back on caffeine and hot drinks, and drink plenty of water.
5. Cool down your skin
If you notice your skin is starting to flush, physically cooling it down can stop a flare-up in its tracks. Carry a simple spray bottle with water to mist on your face when you get too hot, or use a hand or usb-powered fan.
6. Keep your skin clean and hydrated
Sweat can irritate your rosacea, so it's important to cleanse at least twice a day. Don't go too far however, as over-cleansing can be drying, same as using a cleanser that is too harsh for your skin. Equally, avoid long or hot showers as they too can be drying on the skin. Balm cleansers, such as our 3 in 1 Balm Cleanser, are a hydrating option for cleansing your skin.
Your skincare routine will have a big impact on your Rosacea. Therefore, we suggest you revise your routine and make sure it is adjusted for summer, compatible with your skin type and gentle for your rosacea.
